December 19th 1843: ‘A Christmas Carol’ goes on sale
On this day in 1843, Charles Dickens’s ‘A Christmas Carol’ first went on sale. Dickens only began the novel in September 1843 and it was still ready for release that December. It tells the story of the old miser Ebenezer Scrooge who is visited by the ghosts of Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come. These visits reform him and convince him to embrace the spirit of Christmas. It became a quintessential Christmas story and remains popular and poignant.
